Black Cumin (Nigella Sativa) Seed Oil: Research & Composition Highlights for Formulators
Organic Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) Seed Oil
Research & Composition Highlights for Formulators
Black Cumin Seed Oil (Nigella sativa) is one of the most extensively studied botanical oils in the world, valued for its distinctive phytochemical profile and its long history of traditional use across the Middle East, Mediterranean, and South Asia. Our organic, cold-pressed oil gives formulators a well-characterized, richly compositional ingredient to build around.
To help our partners understand what’s inside the oil, we commissioned an independent systematic bioinformatics literature review through CytoSolve’s Research Division. Below are the highlights.
A rigorously reviewed ingredient
The review consolidated the published science on Nigella sativa seed and seed oil:
- 215 peer-reviewed studies analyzed
- Work from 267 researchers across 89 institutions worldwide
- Spanning 34 years of research
- 62 key molecules identified in the nutritional/compositional profile
This is, to the best of the research team’s knowledge, the first comprehensive systematic bioinformatics review of the oil’s composition.
A distinctive compositional profile
The review identified 62 characterized molecules, including approximately 10 minerals, 23 phytochemicals, and 35 fatty acids. Highlights include:
- Thymoquinone — the oil’s signature phytochemical compound, along with related constituents such as thymohydroquinone, thymol, carvacrol, and p-cymene
- A high unsaturated fatty acid content — cold-pressed oil is rich in linoleic acid (an omega-6 essential fatty acid) and oleic acid, with total unsaturated fatty acids reported above 80% in cold-pressed samples
- Naturally occurring tocopherols (vitamin E family)
- Plant sterols, including β-sitosterol
- Minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium
The review also documented how growing region, extraction method (e.g., cold-press vs. solvent), and processing measurably influence the oil’s fatty-acid and phytochemical profile — useful context when specifying an oil for a formulation.
Categories of active research interest
The scientific literature on Nigella sativa seed oil is broad. Researchers have explored its constituents across several wellness categories, making it an ingredient of interest for formulators working in:
- Skin & personal care
- General wellness & nutrition
- Cognitive & mood-support categories
- Digestive & microbiome-focused products
These reflect the categories examined in the published literature and are shared for research context. They are not product performance claims. Any structure/function or cosmetic claim on a finished product must be independently substantiated and worded by the marketer to meet applicable regulatory requirements.
Formulation-friendly and traceable
- Certified organic, cold-pressed
- Well-characterized and consistent — backed by compositional data
- Versatile across topical and ingestible formats
Let’s build something together
